Tonight and tomorrow, Regalia will be open until 9pm, come spend some time in Fan Tan Alley with us, we have lots of beautiful gift ideas and certainly a few things you would want to put on your wish list.
Lots and lots of party dresses, Rev dolls big and small, new Animaux earrings and pendants, leather earrings by Rosalea designs, and great books and records, new and used.
The upstairs studio will be open as well, with a large selection of prints, cards and artwork that have not been readily available in the downstairs store of late, since we ran out of room!
Thanks to everyone who attended the Logans Rock & Roll Market last night, it was great fun, and we picked up a few new suppliers so if you saw something you liked at the market but didn't pick it up, you might be in luck!

New Bonspiel, new clothing and a new floor opening soon!
New to the shop: Bonspiel pouches, pillows and ornaments. Miss Ellen Box has outdone herself once again, using recycled leathers and excellent new prints and designs.
Also in local designs we have Exquisite Corpse clothing now - awesome materials, beautiful colours and exclusive in our shop!
We also received an amazing selection of clothing - new and used - from Maylene at The Slip in Langford. A lot of great dresses and fancy tops, including a Ziggy Stardust dress!
Our plan is to open the upstairs Studio tomorrow with all our less expensive wares: clothes, books, records, and also lots of room to display art and prints that we have had tucked away for lack of space in the shop. Ambitious, but possible! Come down tomorrow and see if we made it!

New pieces by KATE KORESKI were delivered today and they are tasty!!!
The lovely Kate Koreski popped in today after a four hour drive from Tofino. She brought with her a new assortment of necklaces. They are a smaller version of the piece displayed in this article's picture (which is also available in the shop).
Each piece is full of colour... kind of like bubble gum sweets in a candy shop! Mmm!
Kate's creations are certainly inspired from her travels between the west coast of British Columbia and the tropical heat of South America.
Born and raised in Tofino, BC, Kate began her love of jewelry design at a young age having been taught the art of traditional First Nations beadwork through family and friends. She has since spent much of her time juggling life between Tofino, where she spends her summers, and Chile.
This relaxed, colourful lifestyle emerges in her designs. Many of the leathers are sourced in Chile, where an assortment of texture and colours are plentiful.
She reflects upon the joy in creating her designs as doing "what [she] always dreamed of!"

Allow me to introduce... roselea designs.
Lets extend a great, big, warm welcome to a new designer whose pieces are available in Regalia Boutique.
Each piece from roselea designs is handmade by Michelle Woods. She grew up in Nelson, BC and has always been inspired by nature and art. Her skills working with leather were taught to her by her grandmother. These teachings afforded her with the means to make the bags that she always dreamed of. Each bag is unique, and generally customized to what the buyer wants.
Nature is one of the greatest sources of inspiration behind roselea designs, as evident by the intricate detailing in each creation. Whether the design elements contain floral, foliage, or feathers, these bags make a statement without being flashy.
Woods just recently began introducing earrings constructed of leather into the line. Using the same natural colours and overall theme they illustrate a vision with consistency. Each pair is hand carved creating wearable art that is never the same.

If you haven't checked out our selection of jewellery and apparel by K.KOOL. Please do.
K.KOOL represents the creative genius of Victoria native, Kaylea Reeve. Her pieces are a fusion of new and old making each creation an original. One of the signature looks that K.KOOL offers is the traditional dreamcatcher with a contemporary spin. They are bright, bold and classic, yet still embody a feeling of true vintage.
K.KOOL designs have been particularly centred around jewellery, offering an array of necklaces and earrings, but have also expanded into fashion apparel. Regardless of the selected media, the line is thematically unified by a fresh and innovative sense of using classic pieces and presenting them with an undeniably modern twist.
K.KOOL is currently delving into the depths of fashion by exploring the possibilities of clothing design to be launched soon.

This Little City | fashion. design. all things unique
New pieces from ANIMAUX designs arrived this week and they are lovely!
Victoria local, Tiffany Goebel, is the creative mind behind ANIMAUX designs. Her collections range from the delicately charmed to the intricately beaded, drawing attention to her preferred design mediums, chain, beads, and charms.
She has spoken of her design process as one which is heavily influenced by the desire to create unique pieces of jewellery that blend femininity with edge. Many have said that her jewellery also seems inspired by the west coast. Her use of materials such as seed beads, feather charms and stone chips are suggestive of this association.
She reflects upon her style as one that is constantly changing. She feels it is greatly dependent on the happenings of her life. As a result, an ANIMAUX design defies a singular description. Instead, it invokes an array of nuances unique to each piece.
Visit us at Regalia Boutique to claim one for yourself! Link...

We love Georgina Baker & the new jewellery she has sent us.
We just got new pieces from Georgina Baker. Her jewellery designs that incorporate sterling silver dining utensils provide an elegant reinvention of an inherited collectable.
Georgina Baker jewellery is inspired by the trinkets and collectables of a by-gon era; a time of detail and femininity, costume jewellery and functionality.
Growing up in a family of girls, Georgina learnt from a young age the need for women to surround themselves with objects that speak about identity and personality.
Georgina is a trained silversmith and has worked in fashion jewellery for seven years.
Take a look at more of her collections on her website, www.georginabaker.co.nz ... Link...

Opening Reception for Thread&Paint Revolution: An Arty Event by LARA SCARR & BOUCHERAT GALLERY
REGALIA BOUTIQUE will be hosting the opening reception for the upcoming exhibit by BOUCHERAT GALLERY. JULY 2
We are all very excited to introduce the latest feature artist, Lara Scarr. Her most recent works, from the series titled Thread&Paint Revolution, will be on display in the shop JULY 1-31st. Stop by and take a looksy! We are open daily 10-6pm for your shopping and art admiring pleasure.
Lara is a recent Bachelor of Arts graduate from Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo. Her academic focus was a combination of psychology and visual arts. She currently works out of her home studio, located in Yellowpoint, British Columbia, producing an array of mixed media pieces that involve texture, collage and colour washes.
This exhibit marks Lara's debut to the Victoria arts community. It will be a culmination of her latest works from the Thread&Paint Revolution series which are an exploration of complimentary and contrasting media. Each piece attempts to draw attention to the contradicting effect of soothing traditional textiles and unsettling figurative images, reticulated within a labyrinth of thread and paint.

Metal Kites & the Phonemes
We're celebrating Regalia Boutique's move into the alley with a concert in the studio upstairs. Our friends from Toronto are in town to bring the music. Awesome folks, food and drinks downstairs in the new store, Great music. Tickets are $10, available in advance as of Saturday May 22nd at Regalia Boutique's current location on Pandora. Super limited space, so reserving in advance is recommended.
The musical project of Magali Meagher, the Phonemes’ sinewy lyrical imagery finds purchase in simple, melody driven songs and layered rhythm. Sometimes with a band and sometimes with only her own two wings, Magali has sung her way across North America and Europe with Owen Pallett, Bob Wiseman, Basia Bulat, Laura Barrett, The Hidden Cameras, Forest City Lovers and others, backed up American indie icon Daniel Johnston on drums, starred in The Rat King rock opera at New York's international Fringe Festival, opened Kids in the Hall Scott Thompson's "Scottastrophe" tour as well as composed music for a handful animated films. Magali's song "April, let's send his colleagues an e-mail" appears on this year's Friends in Bellwoods compilation to benefit the Toronto Daily Bread Foodbank. Magali is also a member of the wildly popular, Weezer approved band Sheezer with Dana Snell (The Bicycles, Gentleman Reg), Laura Barrett, Robin Hatch (formerly of Sports, the band) and lead guitarist Alysha Haugen.
The Phonemes latest recording released on Blocks Recording Club "There's something we've been meaning to do" was recorded by Efrim Menuck (A Silver Mt. Zion, Godspeed you black emperor) at thee mighty hotel2tango (Arcade Fire, Vic Chesnutt) and features ubiquitous wunderkind Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy).
Magali is working on a second full length recording entitled “The Vanishing Point” to be released in 2010.
Despite the laws of physics, John Tielli's Metal Kites have taken flight. This unusual and beautiful feat was accomplished with the aid of male and female voices, guitars, synths, drums and an assortment of unconventional sounds including tapping, howling, clanking, thumping, swishing, and the melancholic cries of a theremin. These textures along with haunting melodies and dreamlike stories of spiritual and intellectual awakening bring to mind the subconscious explorations of influences such as The Pixies, the Talking Heads, Bob Dylan and film maker David Lynch. Each Metal Kites song seems to create a little world of it's own with unexpected twists that keep you hanging on to every last word and note.
If the listener hears similarities in the timbre and last name of the lead singer to Martin Tielli of Rheostatics that's because John Tielli is Martin's younger brother. If the listener hears some similarities to the Arcade Fire, that too would make sense, given that John's previous influential, Ottawa based indie rock outfit, Clark the band included two members of that band back in the early to mid 2000's (Tim Kingsbury and Jeremy Gara). Incidentally, not long before becoming indie rock icons, the Arcade Fire actually opened for Clark the band on two occasions. Clark the band released 2 critically acclaimed CD's. Of Clark the band's 2005 release “The Woods”, Exclaim! Magazine announced: “truly special...a stunning achievement” and the Ottawa Sun declared: “it’s among the most sublime collection of brilliant, utterly unique pop music you are ever likely to hear.” In 2002 Clark the band was one of 3 finalists for CBC's “Big Break Contest” and subsequently appeared on ZED TV.
Since moving back to his hometown of Toronto in 2006, John Tielli who is the lead singer and primary songwriter of Metal Kites has taken up the theremin and seems to have made a special bond with the unusual instrument.

Art for Haiti
We at Regalia want to aid the Haitian relief effort. Our resident artist/dollmaker Rev is donating 100% of the sales of seven new pieces to the YéleHaiti relief agency, directly assisting the survivors of the earthquake. Rev says "It is of the utmost importance that people understand the history of the poorest and most African nation in the Western hemisphere. Haitians declared their independence from France only 28 years after the U.S. broke off from England. In 1804, the loss of Haiti by France was an embarrassment to Napoleon. In his anger, he sent his colonial officers to fire bullets at the noses of characteristically African sphinx throughout Egypt. The loss of Haiti meant loss of Western economic power for France."
Rev also views Haiti as a spiritual force tightly connected to the Yoruba in Nigeria. "Many Western people still don't get Voudun (voodoo), they think it's about sticking pins in dolls and cracking eggshells. This tragedy is an opportunity for people to understand why Haiti is such a dichotomy of spiritual richness and brutal economic poverty. For me, as a descendant of Jamaicans, I honor my nation's part in liberating Haiti in the late 1700's because it was a Jamaican spiritual leader named Boukman who appointed Toussaint L'Ouverture as the leader of Haiti's independence movement. Haiti scared the shit out of European colonial powers. Haiti is proof that spiritual unification can work miracles.
Please visit www.yele.org for more information about the agency, and Haiti's ongoing struggle.
The dolls will be on display in our window for the next two weeks. Images will be posted soon!

Not just a designer
Ellen Box - the one woman show behind Bonspiel Creation - was lucky enough to attend the Marilyn Manson concert in Victoria last night.
I am very jealous, but she was kind enough to write a review on her blog, so I am sharing it here.
Who knew it was going to be fall so soon? We have a few new goodies in the shop, including new Bonspiel changepurses, multipasses and cloth shopping bags, a few new clothing pieces by Vanya, and some cute new Dirty Girl bicycle mugs.
We have two new jewelry suppliers to brag about this week: Kate Koreski - her work is pictured here - working in leather and satin making cute chunky jewelry in lots of great colours. She is from Tofino, and spends her winters in Chile making her beautiful accessories.
Also new, Sheed-o. The multi-talented Mashed Hooshemand creates these delicate and playful felted pieces. She is a teacher at Knotty by Nature on Government, among other things.

My partner Bill and I are happy to announce that our art gallery, 16 1/2, has earned a new life on the ground floor of Fan Tan Alley, and we have dubbed it the Boucherat Gallery, after the woman who financed the building in 1912, Marie Boucherat.
Yesterday was our first official day open. We have curated an exhibit "the First 50" that includes many artists that we have exhibited in the past, to celebrate our first 50 shows curated in Fan Tan.
There are already some exciting shows planned for the gallery, and we hope you'll come down and visit the new space!
Rev has taken over our window display with a new bushel of visionary woven art dolls, incorporating words, woods and found objects into his display.
So far, everyone has stopped to have a look, some are intrigues, other intimidated, but the installation is effective in it's ability to pique interest and raise questions.
Rev's work has been a fixture in Victoria for nearly a decade now, straddling the line between arts and crafts and tricking us into thinking they are both.
We're threatening to build him a website.

I am very pleased with it so far, as much as I am pleased with the new shop! Everyone has been very encouraging and lovely through the entire transformation, and for that I am incredibly grateful - most especially for those of you who volunteered your time and able bodies to give us a hand.
We wrenched those doors open November 8th, and there is no time to waste - let's have a party! I'm planning the "Coronation" (read "grand opening") for Saturday, November 22nd. We'll be revelling from 1pm on to 7pm, and maybe later, who knows? But we will be inviting the press and all our dear friends to celebrate with us, so if you haven't had a chance to see the new shop, this is the perfect excuse to come down.
